Prenatal Massage at Mom N Jo

The joys of pregnancy does not just stop at morning sickness. 2nd trimester arrives and say hello to Mr Backache! Oh you didn't experience either morning sickness nor backaches? Go away! You shouldn't even be reading this post..Just kidding!

On a more serious note, most pregnant women like myself will start to feel aches around the body once 2nd trimester hits. The increased weight from the belly adds more pressure to our backs as well as legs, hence the aches begin. And for me, the need to gag into the toilet bowl at least twice a day causes my neck and shoulders to ache too. Yes I know, I feel like I've aged fifty years being pregnant.

However as much as we need the comforts of a massage, one can't just step into any massage place now. Firstly we can't lie face down anymore...duh! Hence we need massages that are tailored for us while we lie sideways which means options are kind of limited. I decided to check with my good friend once again, Mr Google and ta da...Mom N Jo came up. Well there's really not many spas in Jakarta which list prenatal massage in their menus.

After reading couple of reviews which were mostly positive, I decided to give Mom N Jo a try; I booked an appointment for myself (Prenatal Massage) and hubby G(Deep Tissue Massage).

We arrived at the House of Mom N Jo, the one located at Dharmawangsa. As we entered the spa and were greeted by the nice reception and ambience, we held high hopes and anticipation for our treatments.

Situated along a stretch of houses, very near Dharmawangsa Square.
Manicure/Pedicure Area..actually looks comfy for a pregger.
Couple Spa Room

The masseuse were courteous and spoke good-enough english. G and I were led to the couple spa room which is done up nicely, considerably small for Jakarta standards but cozy.

I was propped nicely with multiple cushions as I lay to my side; the masseuse began the massage. She used some pregnancy friendly oil and oiled me all over (like Waygu beef). The massage lasted 80 minutes and frankly I did not feel much relief after the massage. I find that the moves are too repetitive especially when they just oil and repeat the movements for like ten times. Even after I told my masseuse to add more pressure on the areas where I ache, the types of strokes performed did not help to relieve those achy muscles. The whole treatment feels more like an aromatherapy oil massage and more suited for someone who just wants to relax.

G actually fell asleep! After 20 minutes into the massage, I hear him(who is next to me) snoring away. I was pretty sure I ordered a Deep Tissue Massage for him...How can he possibly be so relaxed to fall into a deep sleep?!

I was quite disappointed as I could hardly convinced G to come for a massage with me(he would rather spend the time doing work or gym) and was advocating to him how a deep tissue massage was going to be so good for him. When we were paying up at the reception, I clarified with the receptionist again if G got the Deep Tissue Massage or the Oil Massage and she confirmed that he got what we requested for. Ohh...We were hoping at least it was an error.

At the meantime, this was also the first time I met a receptionist in Jakarta that tries to upsell a package and aggressively. I politely turned down when she asked for the first time and told her that I would want to try other spas' prenatal massage before committing into a package with them. She continued pushing us the package until G got irritated and gave her a stern no.

So I think if you are those who prefer a gentle type of massage, Mom N Jo would be perfect for you as the ambience and masseuse's service is pretty decent. The massage treatments starts at about 255,000idr (~25usd). However if you are like me and looking for some real relief off those knots and aches, this is probably not for you.

Ambience- 7.5/10
Service- 8/10
Value- 6/10
Overall- 6.5/10

Oh well...I am still in search of a good prenatal massage which I am sure other moms-to-be would also be very interested, do drop me a note or comment below if you have any recommendations! My aching back would really thank you for it!

*Update* (22 June 2014)

I found a home massage service that can do both prenatal and postnatal massages; I have been using them for the past two months and it's great! Love it that I don't have to step out my house and yet can enjoy a good massage. It is also amazing that they can send the therapist to your house within the same day of reservation. The prices are extremely reasonable as they cater to local Indonesians so you'd probably need to get your household staff to make a reservation for you (if you can't speak bahasa). Drop me an email if you want the contact information or to know more details :)

Ikkousha Japanese Ramen in Jakarta

We were craving for something soupy the other day; Indonesian food is mostly fried. We decided to check out the ramen store- Ikkousha. We went to the branch in Senayan City but they have couple of outletsIt is supposed to be a franchise from renowned ramen chain in Japan. I was feeling a bit skeptical of halal ramen-  you know great ramen broth is usually stewed from pork bones. The ambience is pretty nice and its attempt to make it look japanese is not bad. Miso Ramen Some spicy egg broth ramen, surprisingly tasty! Chicken Karage The outcome? I was surprised that it was pretty good! Of course it lacks the oomfph of the usual thick pork broth but they got the taste as well as the ramen right. I found the spicy egg broth really delicious and satiable to my soup craving; it's quite spicy though. The prices are also reasonable, costing about 80,000IDR (8USD) per bowl. Since we live only couple minutes away, we will definitely be coming back here quite regula...

Weekend brunch: Tana Merah Coffee Shop, Jakarta

My Indonesian girlfriend and I decided to check out this cafe- Tana Merah Coffee Shop for brunch last Saturday. Tana Merah Coffee Shop is located near Thamrin City amongst a row of shophouses. It is quite hard to find if you are going there for the first time. Just give the cafe a call (like we did) and they will give you or your driver precise directions to the cafe. This post will have lots of foodporn! Yay! For once, I made a conscious effort to take pictures of the food before digging into it. The reason I can't be a food blogger (despite I am such a foodie!) is that I can barely have the discipline to take pictures of all the delicious yummy dishes before I already poked one of my utensils in. Upon entering the cafe. Situated amonst a row of shophouses. I eyed the next table's order and the sandwiches looked great so I decided to order one for myself. My friend went for the french toast. The food presentation (for Jakarta standards) was pretty good and th...

Eat@Bali: Potato Head Beach Club at Seminyak

Our friends were telling us to visit Potato Head Garage when they learnt that we were visiting Bali; the food bloggers are also raving about this place in their blogs...so we decided to check it out. Arriving ten minutes prior to Potato Head's opening hour at 11am, we were refused by the security as well as the restaurant staff to enter the restaurant. I was trying to explain that we have a toddler who was very flushed from the heat and that we would just like to take a seat in the restaurant till they can take our orders at 11am...which is like 10 minutes away... No, we can't take a seat at the restaurant while we wait and the staff wanted us (G, a pregnant woman and a young toddler) to stand under the scorching hot sun for 10 minutes until the magical clock strikes 11am. The chairs, which were in the shade were just couple steps away, and NO..WE HAVE TO STAND UNDER THE SUN WHILE WE WAIT FOR THE MAGICAL OPENING HOUR.   I thought it was pretty ridiculous. I asked fo...
