4 Tips To Have An Easier Time When Bringing Baby Out

Lil Alexander is turning 2 months in a week's time! I know most asian parents avoid taking their young infants out, I however brought baby out when he was only 3 days old. Kudos to moms who persevered  and stayed home throughout the whole confinement or avoided taking baby out for the first 3 months!

Feeling all cooped up, I bring baby out on average twice a week and during this time, I realized how important it is to visit baby friendly places.  After trial and error from my own experience and frantic attempts,  below is a list of notes I've compiled to make your life as a parent cool and easier!

Top 4 Things to Note (to make your life easier!) When You Take Your Baby Out

Tip 1: Always know/take note where the diaper changing stations are located

To avoid the frenzy, do arm yourself with the knowledge of where the diaper changing stations are especially if you know that you are going to be in that location for a while. The diaper change and need to nurse (for exclusively breastfed babies) is simply unpredictable once the baby is out.  In the beginning, I find myself having to change baby's diapers in the store I'm shopping in and once, I have to do it at Mont Blanc's VIP room as the store is too far away from the changing station!

I have a whole compilation of diaper changing/nursing rooms in Singapore in this post.

Tip 2: Feed your baby and change his/her diaper before you have your own meal

As much as we love Alexander, we find the coincidence of him waking up and wailing like it's the end of the world while we are in the midst of our meals..highly annoying. One of us will end up leaving our meal to tend to him and always find our food cold by the time we are done. So now, we try to minimise that happening by letting him be so comfortable that he would fall into a slumber that is long enough to enjoy a 30-45 mins meal.

Tip 3: Always bring a few ziplock bags, foldable changing mat and (if possible) some pumped milk

Sometimes you just couldn't find a diaper changing or nursing room and have to make do in whichever location you are. I find myself changing baby's diaper on the car seat itself sometimes. Just simply place a changing mat on the car seat attached to the stroller and you can just change baby's diaper anywhere! Then dispose his soiled diapers in the ziplock bag and keep it with you till you find a trashcan nearby. Believe me, this will happen more frequently than you expect. For e.g: if you are shopping in places like H&M and the nearest diaper changing station is quite some distance away or in the middle of purchasing something in Mont Blanc like I was and have to make do with the couch in the store! And of course the pumped milk will come in handy too when you can't find a nursing room in time.

The portable changing mat can be as simple as a larger hand towel, or you can purchase the waterproof ones in various sites online. I haven't noticed one in the stores here, perhaps MotherCare might have. Kushies (http://www.kushiesonline.com/Kushies-Change-Pads-s/243.htm) or Skiphop Pronto (http://www.skiphop.com/product/jonathanadler.html) will be good options.

Drop me an email if you want one of these from the US, I'll be able to get it for you for at least 15%- 20% less than local retail price after shipping.

Tip 4: Use a baby carrier like Baby Bjorn or Ergo instead of stroller if baby is fussy

It is hard to soothe a baby in a car sear or stroller when they are being fussy. Carrying them in your arms may be exhausting over an extended period of time. I got a hand me down baby carrier (brandless) from a friend and tried it on lil Alexander, it worked like magic. It never failed to put him to sleep since he was 1.5 week old. The only concern is that the brandless carrier doesn't have safety locks so I don't feel very safe carrying him as he gets heavier. When he was 1 month old, we decided to purchase Baby Bjorn Carrier. I would suggest to buy one with Air Mesh material if you are staying in a humid/warm climate city as it can get quite hot for baby.

Most babies wil like the carrier whether being carried by mummies or daddies as the body contact and rocking motion soothes them. Alexander can sleep through even when we sat down so this is amazing for parents who wants peace and less drama when you are out with your little one.

Ikkousha Japanese Ramen in Jakarta

We were craving for something soupy the other day; Indonesian food is mostly fried. We decided to check out the ramen store- Ikkousha. We went to the branch in Senayan City but they have couple of outletsIt is supposed to be a franchise from renowned ramen chain in Japan. I was feeling a bit skeptical of halal ramen-  you know great ramen broth is usually stewed from pork bones. The ambience is pretty nice and its attempt to make it look japanese is not bad. Miso Ramen Some spicy egg broth ramen, surprisingly tasty! Chicken Karage The outcome? I was surprised that it was pretty good! Of course it lacks the oomfph of the usual thick pork broth but they got the taste as well as the ramen right. I found the spicy egg broth really delicious and satiable to my soup craving; it's quite spicy though. The prices are also reasonable, costing about 80,000IDR (8USD) per bowl. Since we live only couple minutes away, we will definitely be coming back here quite regula...

Weekend brunch: Tana Merah Coffee Shop, Jakarta

My Indonesian girlfriend and I decided to check out this cafe- Tana Merah Coffee Shop for brunch last Saturday. Tana Merah Coffee Shop is located near Thamrin City amongst a row of shophouses. It is quite hard to find if you are going there for the first time. Just give the cafe a call (like we did) and they will give you or your driver precise directions to the cafe. This post will have lots of foodporn! Yay! For once, I made a conscious effort to take pictures of the food before digging into it. The reason I can't be a food blogger (despite I am such a foodie!) is that I can barely have the discipline to take pictures of all the delicious yummy dishes before I already poked one of my utensils in. Upon entering the cafe. Situated amonst a row of shophouses. I eyed the next table's order and the sandwiches looked great so I decided to order one for myself. My friend went for the french toast. The food presentation (for Jakarta standards) was pretty good and th...

Dinner Buffet At The Ritz Carlton, Asia Restaurant (Mega Kuningan)

To 'celebrate' our successful week in Jakarta, I suggested to G that we should do a nice dinner at the Ritz just across the street. It was actually just an excuse to have a variety of food that I would like- satisfying both my Sashimi and Bakso (Indonesian meatballs) cravings at the same time. So we arrived at the Ritz, just 2 minutes drive or 5 minutes walk from our apartment and was greeted once again, by an entourage of friendly and eager staff (seems like every slightly higher end place in Jakarta practise this). I was pretty looking forward to the dinner as I'd thought that the Ritz will probably have one of the best buffets in town (I am a huge buffet lover). Fresh Seafood Section Mexican/Grill Section Desert Section Back to 90s: Seating Arrangement Ambience To be frank, I wasn't very impressed by the interior layout of the restaurant (you can judge for yourself from the above picture). I almost wanted to turn around and walk out of the r...
