Craving Authentic Chinese? Check this out: Hunan Kitchen.

Thanks to Jakarta100bars, I managed to find a Chinese Restaurant that serves authentic Chinese cuisine here in Jakarta. I was really excited as I always loved Szechuan food and was not too sure if we could find it here in Jakarta. Since our friend Deena, who is heading back to New York soon, also loves Szechuan; it was a perfect excuse to drag G for Chinese food.

After half an hour ride, we finally approached an area that has couple of dark alleys with tiny restaurants appearing occasionally along the way. Just when we were afraid that we could have just missed the place, a Ancient-Chinese inspired looking building emerged at the corner (just across brightly lit O-Town Coffee). We found our Chinese haven.

When we arrived, the restaurant was a bit empty( with a large troop of servers) so we weren't sure if it was really as good as it was reviewed. However we decided to take the risk.

Stir-fried Chinese Spinach. (Sautéed Vegetables)

Spicy Fried Frog Legs. 

Fried buns and Spicy Szechuan Lamb.
Whole Duck in Spices.
I would say the vegetables were very well done, the best sauteed vegetable dish I had in Jakarta so far. The frog legs were extremely delicious; it's Deena's first time having frog and she loves it (taste like chicken, she says). The fried bun is worth having, especially if you dip it into condense milk, it's super yummy.

I would probably skip the lamb and duck the next time and try something else. Oh and I didn't mention that they have a really extensive menu? Like thousand pages..okay maybe I exaggerate but it's about 15pages? So there's really a lot to choose from if you like Chinese food. And be warned that the portions are quite huge, contrary to Indonesian restaurants. We actually over ordered and had to pack it home.

We had 6 dishes(3 meats, 3 vegetables) and the bill only came up to be about 550,000IDR (bout 50USD~).

Overall
8/10. The layout of the restaurant is nothing fancy but it reminds me of restaurants one may find in China. The taste is authentic enough with a huge variety of dishes, I will definitely return back for more.

    I can totally when it comes to the massive menus! I feel the same way when I am in Grand Duck King! the menu is so big and thick that it's heavy as a book (hard bound too!) and at first we didn't know what to order, but after being regulars we finally figured out our favourites. I'm always partial to Crystal Jade Xiao Long Bao and Grand Duck King. What's your favourite Chinese in jakarta?

      Yes I like Duck King too but got quite sick of it after a while. My favourite Chinese in Jakarta so far is Paradise Dynasty at Plaza Senayan. I find that the dishes are pretty decent and of course one of the rare restaurants that serve pork. :D

    We lived a bit far from Duck King so we only reserved dining there for when we had guests. I wish we did eat there a bit more haha! TD loves Paradise Dynasty too! When we first ate there I think we OD-ed on pork. That's what we get for being so deprived - pork sweat haha!

We were craving for something soupy the other day; Indonesian food is mostly fried. We decided to check out the ramen store- Ikkousha. We went to the branch in Senayan City but they have couple of outletsIt is supposed to be a franchise from renowned ramen chain in Japan. Since we live only couple minutes away, we will definitely be coming back here quite regula...

Weekend brunch: Tana Merah Coffee Shop, Jakarta

My Indonesian girlfriend and I decided to check out this cafe- Tana Merah Coffee Shop for brunch last Saturday. Tana Merah Coffee Shop is located near Thamrin City amongst a row of shophouses. It is quite hard to find if you are going there for the first time. Just give the cafe a call (like we did) and they will give you or your driver precise directions to the cafe. This post will have lots of foodporn! Yay! For once, I made a conscious effort to take pictures of the food before digging into it. Eat@Bali: Potato Head Beach Club at Seminyak

Our friends were telling us to visit Potato Head Garage when they learnt that we were visiting Bali; the food bloggers are also raving about this place in their blogs...so we decided to check it out. Arriving ten minutes prior to Potato Head's opening hour at 11am, we were refused by the security as well as the restaurant staff to enter the restaurant. I was trying to explain that we have a toddler who was very flushed from the heat and that we would just like to take a seat in the restaurant till they can take our orders at 11am...which is like 10 minutes away... No, we can't take a seat at the restaurant while we wait and the staff wanted us (G, a pregnant woman and a young toddler) to stand under the scorching hot sun for 10 minutes until the magical clock strikes 11am.
